Red Corner: The Rise and Fall of Communism in Northeastern Montana

by Verlaine Stoner McDonald
As towns in northeastern Montana approach their centennials, The Red Corner chronicles the events of the teens and 1920s that left a permanent mark on the region. Sheridan County was the site of an armed robbery of $100,000 from the county treasury, a Young Communist camp, an adolescentโ€s โ€Bolshevik funeral,โ€ and surveillance by FBI agents who pursued some radical leaders even into the 1960s. The book profiles several influential Communists including a colorful newspaper editor who was elected state senator and later national chairman of the Farmer Labor Party, as well as his comrade, the county sheriff, who was allegedly involved in graft, prostitution, and bootlegging. In spite of its notoriety, the farmersโ€ movement became one of the nationโ€s most successful rural Communist organizations during the 1920s.

Confessions of a Mullah Warrior

by Masood Farivar
Masood Farivar was ten years old when his childhood in peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan was shattered by the Soviet invasion in 1979. Farivar, who was born into a long line of religious and political leaders who have shaped his nationโ€s history for centuries, fled to Pakistan with his family and came of age in refugee schools. At eighteen, he defied his parents and returned home to join the jihad, fighting beside not only the Afghan mujahideen but also Arab and Pakistani volunteers. When the Soviets withdrew, Farivar moved to America and attended the prestigious Lawrenceville School, Harvard, and ultimately became a journalist in New York. In this dramatic and timely memoir, Farivar draws on his unique experience as a native Afghan, a former mujahideen fighter, and a longtime U.S. resident to provide unprecedented insight into the recent collision between Islam and the West. He paints a vibrant portrait of his family and his nationโ€s history, exposes the world of militant ...

Just Passin' Thru: A Vintage Store, the Appalachian Trail, and a Cast of Unforgettable Characters

by Winton Porter
Like a well-crafted stage play, Just Passin' Thru delivers one suspenseful scene after another. But in this historic setting โ€” a store on the Appalachian Trail called Mountain Crossings โ€” the characters who show up are no fictional creations. They are the real-life stars of the authorโ€s new life as a backpack-purging, canteen-selling, hostel-running, bandage-taping, lost-child finding, argument-settling, romance-fixing, chili-making man of many faces. Like any good drama, there are the good guys (and gals) and the weirdos, too. Some show up once (and thatโ€s enough), and some appear again and again. Some are friends, and some dangerous. But all are united by two things: the authorโ€s story-capturing talent, and whatever it is that lures them to attempt (or conquer) a 2,200-mile path that climbs and plummets from Georgia to Maine.

Great Stories of Hiking the Appalachian Trail

These are the stories of the earliest hikers, the ones who did it before it was the thing to do, when it was said to be impossible, and when a person was considered crazy to even try.

Black Belt Patriotism: How to Reawaken America

by Chuck Norris
The New York Times best seller now available in a trade paper edition!Chuck Norris says, "Black Belt Patriotism is my critique of what is destroying our country, and offers my solutions for rebuilding America and restoring the American dream. It's 'black belt' in the sense that it is strong, resolute and to the point, like a roundhouse kick. It's 'patriotic' in the sense that it recaptures the vision of America's Founding Fathers. I wrote this book in the hope that future generations of Americans can continue to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness . . . ."It doesn't take many people to foster a revolution. Jesus did it with twelve disciples. George Washington did it with his few suffering troops at Valley Forge. And we can do it today. We can set a new direction for America with people like you and me, who through our efforts in our communities and at the ballot box and in our personal lives can make this country everything it should be.โ€...

The Value of Nothing: How to Reshape Market Society and Redefine Democracy

by Raj Patel
"A deeply though-provoking book about the dramatic changes we must make to save the planet from financial madness."--Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrineย Opening with Oscar Wilde's observation that "nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing," Patel shows how our faith in prices as a way of valuing the world is misplaced.ย  He reveals the hidden ecological and social costs of a hamburger (as much as $200), and asks how we came to have markets in the first place.ย  Both the corporate capture of government and our current financial crisis, Patel argues, are a result of our democratically bankrupt political system.ย If part one asks how we can rebalance society and limit markets, part two answers by showing how social organizations, in America and around the globe, are finding new ways to describe the world's worth.ย  If we don't want the market to price every aspect of our lives, we need to lear...

Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America

by John Avlon
ย A bad craziness is snaking through America in the first years of the Obama administration: THE WINGNUTS ARE ON THE ATTACK!

Whatโ€s a wingnut?

A wingnut is someone on the far-right or far-left wing of the political spectrum โ€“ professional partisans, unhinged activists, and paranoid conspiracy theorists. Barack Obama campaigned as an antidote to the politics of polarization, promising to transcend the old divides of left and right, black and white, red states and blue. But in the first year of his presidency, he is presiding over an eruption of hate and hyper-partisanship that threatens to mock the promise upon which he was elected.

Wingnuts is a reported exploration of the outer reaches of American politics, told from the perspectives of a radical centrist who believes that the far right and the far left are equally insane. On the way, weโ€ll meet the โ€Queen of the Birther,โ€ Orly Taitz, and the Orange County pastor who is openly prayin...

Courting Disaster: How the CIA Kept America Safe and How Barack Obama Is Inviting the Next Attack

by Marc A. Thiessen
White House speechwriter Marc Thiessen was locked in a secure room and given access to the most sensitive intelligence when he was tasked to write President George W. Bushโ€s 2006 speech explaining the CIAโ€s interrogation program and why Congress should authorize it. Few know more about these CIA operations than Thiessen, and in his new book, Courting Disaster, he documents just how effective the CIAโ€s interrogations were in foiling attacks on America, penetrating al-Qaedaโ€s high command, and providing our military with actionable intelligence. Thiessen also shows how reckless President Obama has been in shutting down the CIAโ€s program and releasing secret documents that have aided our enemies. Courting Disaster proves:

How the CIA program thwarted specific deadly attacks against the U.S.
Why โ€enhanced interrogationโ€ was not torture by any reasonable legal or moral standard
How the information gained by โ€enhanced interrogationโ€ could no...
